Transition to Graduate Study NURS 6003 Walden University

Hello everyone. My name is xx. I have always had a strong interest in helping others. Going into nursing has provided me with a good opportunity to help those who I believe will benefit from my knowledge and expertise. I am a registered nurse who has decided to pursue a master’s degree to provide even higher quality of care to patients. My decision to become a nurse practitioner is influenced by the realization that there is a need for more primary healthcare providers in the healthcare system. Mental healthcare is one area which suffers significantly from a lack of providers. My aim is to be able to provide high quality mental healthcare services to patients who will benefit from this type of care. I have a strong belief in the importance of disease prevention rather than a cure for the disease. My professional and academic goals are geared towards becoming a well educated and trained psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner who is able to consider patients in their entirety and provide them with high quality care which meets their health needs.

Walden University’s  vision, mission, goals, and social change initiatives align with my professional and academic goals and help me to become a scholar-practitioner. Walden’s vision is  a distinctively different 21st-century learning community where knowledge is judged worthy to the degree that it can be applied by its graduates to the immediate solutions of critical societal challenges, thereby advancing the greater global good. I have a major interest in primary care which focuses on the prevention of diseases rather than their management. With Walden’s vision of training graduates who can apply knowledge to the immediate solutions of critical societal challenges, this aligns with my professional goal of providing high quality mental healthcare services.According to Xue et al (2019), there are many underserved areas which lack highly qualified primary care providers involved in the provision of mental health care services Transition to Graduate Study NURS 6003 Walden University.

Walden’s mission is to train professionals who can act as agents of social change. Healthcare providers have a unique honor and ability to impact social change. Many members of the community trust their healthcare providers and are willing to listen to them. There is a need for these providers to know how to act as agents of change and advocate for the safety and wellbeing of their patients and others in the community. According to Curtis et al (2015), healthcare providers can use their training to educate and train the community to engage in healthy and beneficial activities for their health. Walden’s mission aligns with my goals of improving community health and having a positive impact on my community. Through my training, I will be able to educate the members of the community on mental health issues, stigmatization against patients with mental health conditions and how the community can help these patients to be able to function as normally as possible in society.

Walden has several goals it aims to achieve with its students. Amongst these include: to provide its programs through diverse process-learning approaches, all resulting in outcomes of quality and integrity and to provide an inquiry/action model of education that fosters research, discovery, and critical thinking and that results in professional excellence. As a provider, it is very important to continually keep researching and learning new developments in the health field. According to Keefe and  Gin. (2020), engagement in research is crucial to advancement and maintenance of quality in the care process. These goals align with my professional and academic goals of engaging and utilizing research for the promotion of the health of my patients and community at large.

Walden’s MSN program outcomes and perspectives align with my professional and academic goals and my becoming a scholar practitioner. Walden’s MSN program seeks to produce professionals who can use evidence-based research in their practice, demonstrate effective communication abilities and evaluate health needs of diverse populations and make treatment decisions. There are several other outcomes and perspectives listed by Walden for students engaged in its MSN program. These outcomes and perspectives align with my goals of becoming a highly trained, compassionate and effective psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner. These goals also align with my aims of engaging and utilizing research to provide high quality care to my patients.

   Importance of Networking

Networking is important because it helps an individual to progress in their academic field. Networking can be done in different ways. Networking with professional associations help nurses with career choices and career decisions. These organizations provide in-depth information and help to practicing nurse practitioners and prospective nurse practitioners. Networking with other nurses and nurse leaders also help nurses to advance in their careers. According to Saleh et al (2018), nurse leaders play a very important role in guiding young nurses in their professional lives. Thus young nurses should always endeavor to network with senior nurses who will help them to make decisions regarding their careers.

My Goals to Becoming a Scholar-Practitioner

My goal to become a scholar-practitioner began prior to even completing my Bachelor’sof Science in NursingI knew I wanted to be a nurse practitionerI just was unsure of which population I wanted to treatThis is where Walden University entered the picturecolleague of mine graduated and became a cardiac care nurse practitioner and she said she did the whole program online from homeThis sounded very intriguing.

I have had a nursing career spanning fourteen years that includes pediatric care, geriatric care, administration, a mixed medical intensive care unit, and a per diem job caring for sexual assault victimsIn all these specialties mental health plays an enormous roleMental health can affect the physical health of the patient which affects positive outcomes in any of these health care settings. Transition to Graduate Study NURS 6003 Walden University This connection between physical health and mental health has guided me towards obtaining a degree as a mental health nurse practitionerIt became very desirable for me to think about bridging the gap as a nurse to help patients reach their full potential.

Walden university School of Nursing provides flexibility in learning and instructors all hold doctorate degreesWalden University is the perfect fit for my goal in obtaining my master’sdegreeIt is completely online, flexible, and as the vision statement states, “The college of Nursing will be recognized for its preeminent programs and innovative educational approaches that prepare distinguished graduates to advance the greater good of global communities”(Walden University, 2022a). The mission statement states,” The college of nursing, dedicated to excellence in nursing education, provides programs to transform diverse nursing professionals into champions of change who will improve health outcomes and advance health equity”(Walden University, 2022a). Working with patients who have mental health needs, the nurse practitioner must be willing to work with patients in various communities that may be underserved and neglectedMental health providers must be educated on the importance of their role and the effect of mental health on the global population. Walden University is educating nurses to meet this challenge of positive health outcomes by being a diverse, flexible, global institution. The Walden Master of Nursing program outcomes relate to my professional and academic goals of becoming a MHNPThe outcome that most aligns with my goals are, the 5thgoal noted in the Walden catalogue stating, “Evaluate health needs of diverse populations for necessary teaching/coaching functions based on specialist nursing knowledge to restore/promote health and prevent illness/injury”(Walden University, 2022b).

Walden University also stresses the importance of networkingNetworking is a critical component in obtaining a degree as a nurse practitionerA network of professionals with advanced degrees in the mental health field would be helpful for clinical, job recommendations, knowledge, and eventually career advancement.

In conclusion, Walden’s vision, mission, and goals align with my goals in obtaining an advanced degree. The online format will allow flexibility, easier connections to other students and teachers who we may never get the chance to interact withand a wide range of helpful resources.

Transition to Graduate Study NURS 6003 Walden University Discussion post 1

My goals, Walden’s Vision, Mission, and social outcome

My name is Mercy Mathew. I started my nursing career in 2013 as a floor nurse at a nursing home. I moved to my current job in 2015 which is a living center for mentally challenged individuals. Coming from a nursing home, my new job was entirely different. I slowly learned that I must apply different skill sets and knowledge to achieve success when working with mentally challenged individuals. I have had impactful interactions with my patients and multidisciplinary team, and through these interactions, I learned that I wanted to explore this area and provide my professional care overall. That is when I decided to challenge myself and advance my career as a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner.

Working full time and continuing my education was not an easy task. I came across Walden University’s online MSN degree program and realized that it is designed in a way that I can continue giving quality care to my patients while attending school. Walden’s core values and mission are well-aligned with my career goals. Walden’s mission talks about providing each student with the opportunity to transform as a scholar practitioner who can create positive social change.

Walden commits to provide quality and integrity through diverse process-learning approaches. Walden’s MSN program implements specialist nursing roles to promote quality improvement of patient-centered care in accordance with professional practice standards that transform health outcomes for diverse populations. (Walden University. (n.d.)) This fits my career goals, and I look forward to working with Walden University and I am excited to apply Walden’s vision, mission, and goals to create a positive social change as an outcome.

Importance of Networking

Networking is essential for nursing professionals. Social Media is used by millions of people these days. (Wofford, P. (2018)) There are several platforms where nurses can connect with individuals to share and gather information. Social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter give you access to various health professionals which will create opportunities for personal and professional development. The UCLA Carrer Guide claims that 80% of all jobs are obtained through networking. (Schmidt, K. (n.d.)) Networking is crucial for career advancement and will play a significant role in achieving success in day-to-day jobs as well as completing the Psychiatric NP program.
