Unit 2 Assignment
The war in Ukraine has been very tragic as described by international observers in Ukraine. Stretching to more than 580 days since the war first began in February 2022, tensions continue to mount along the war frontline even as the global economic order changes significantly. The human and economic costs of the war attest to its tragic nature, with many Ukrainians and Russians dead and displaced, perhaps it is time for the global community to intervene in ending the war and finding a lasting solution. Those at the war front describe it as an unnecessary loss with neither side showing signs of gaining any decisive victory. They continue to have a war of attrition and do not appear ready to have any peaceful resolution (The World is One News, 2023). With the descriptions offered by those at the war front, I get the sense that they are concerned about the ongoing losses that are perceived as unnecessary and avoidable. I feel drawn to the fact that the war has continued for more than a year and a half and created a humanitarian crisis as people die and are displaced on both sides and yet there are no signs of an end.
The US Army takes the issue of sexual harassment and assault very seriously. In fact, the army has created a Sexual Harassment/Assault Response and Prevention (SHARP) Program Office to direct efforts toward preventing and comprehensively responding to issues of sexual harassment, sexual assault, and associated retaliatory behavior persuasive communication assignment essay. The program is described as proactively integrated into addressing issues of sexual harassment and assault within the armed forces, engaging specially educated and trained staff in managing responses, promoting cultural change, and educating army personnel on how to prevent and respond to incidences of sexual harassment and assault (US Army Directorate of Prevention, Resilience and Readiness, 2023). In reading about the program, I get the sense that this is a serious issue within the army that affects its effectiveness. I am drawn to the fact that the US Army acknowledges the issue of sexual harassment and assault within its ranks, and has proceeded to proactively address the issue by creating the SHARP program. The program is mandated to facilitate prevention as well as provide comprehensive response capabilities.
In March 2022, President Joe Biden gave a speech in Warsaw, Poland, intended to rally the rest of the world to support the people of Ukraine. Biden used emotionally charged language. In his speech, Biden first described a previous one by Pope John Paul II after his election in October 1978, noting that the Pope’s message was instrumental in bringing down the Iron Curtain, ending the Soviet Union, and changing the world. Throughout his speech, Biden makes repeated references to the many times that Eastern Europe has faced wars, and that each time the aggressors were defeated. In addition, he describes America as committed to supporting Ukraine by spending $650 million before the war and $1.3 billion since the invasion (The White House, 2022). With each historical example, I get the sense that Biden is placing more emphasis on the fact that justice always prevails and that the aggressor can only have temporary victories. In addition, I get the sense that Biden is making an emotional appeal to the rest of the world by highlighting the fact that America has committed more than $2 billion to supporting Ukraine. I feel myself being drawn into what Biden is saying and feel his passion for supporting Ukraine in fighting off Russia’s invasion.
