  • Scholarly Resources in Graduate Studies

Graduate students must ensure that only credible sources are referenced in their works. This is imperative to produce the type of quality works that are relevant to their area of study. Al-Jundi and Sakka (2017) express the belief that being able to review and determine what sources are credible needs to be a basic skill.

Several databases exist for scholars to explore in regard to finding credible sources for their scholarly writing. Walden University (n.d.) provides many databases through the online library. This can be easily accessed through the student portal. Particularly of use to nursing students is the A-Z Guide for nursing databases. Utilizing this shortcut, this nurse easily found several applicable databases for nursing research.

The ProQuest Nursing and Allied Health Database proved very helpful in finding credible resources for this discussion. This database was very easy to use and there were no issues finding more than one peer-reviewed scholarly article with publication dates within the previous 12 months. The process was simple in that the search term was entered and two boxes were checked to search for full-text, peer-reviewed articles. The search was then further narrowed down by filtering for scholarly articles with publication dates within the previous 12 months. This database would be beneficial to fellow nurses, as the focus of this database is nursing and allied health. With the combination of ease of use and the results produced that were applicable to the area of interest, this database would most certainly be recommendable to colleagues.

The specific article that was obtained for this assignment is listed below. The article focus is a descriptive qualitative study by Soccio (2022) that addresses the use of simulation in mental health studies. The result of the study was the determination that students are able to transfer what they learn in mental health scenario simulations into a live practice setting. However, Soccio (2022) does point out the need for further study in this area.

Great post Pamela. There are many databases available to help students search for credible scholarly articles. As discussed in your post, the database Proquest One Academic & Allied Health Database is one provided by the university online library. This database “includes abstracts and indexting that covers nursing, allied health, alternative, and complementary medicine, and related topics (Walden University (n.d.).” This database is one of many that can aid us students find articles related to the nursing field, and our particular interests. The abstract part of it is beneficial as it provides a quick general summary of what the article is about. Using databases such as the ones available on Walden University’s online library are particularly useful for student success. “Access to electronic resources has a greater impact on student performance (Rafi et al., 2018).” This impact is due to the many advantages of using databases for scholarly articles and research, as is that it allows individuals to obtain information from multiple sources.

        Module 3 Discussion Response 1

One of the things that I have noted with graduate education is that it over-emphasizes professional and ethical conduct and upholds academic standards (Guidelines for Good Practice in Graduate Education, n.d.). Anyone enrolled in a graduate program must be ready and willing to adhere to these provisions lest they encounter obstacles likely to push them out of their academic progress. Also, motivation and strong academic and professional backgrounds have proved crucial for excellence in graduate education. To produce the desired quality of research papers and assignments, one must master the skill of searching and identifying credible sources in recognized libraries and databases. While this may be considered an essential skill, it can be challenging, especially when one is not keen or does not want to commit time to scrutinize sources available online. Credibility in research is the ability of a source to inspire belief. A credible source is a high-quality source that provides relevant information related to one’s topic of interest and is also current and published within the standards of scientific inquiry (Healey Library, 2022). In other words, a source is credible if it presents strong, correct, and verifiable evidence, organized according to a standard research paper.

          Hello Zheman,

Thank you for sharing your discussion. It was easy to follow through and helpful for one who would like to find a peer-reviewed journal or article from the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (CDSR). I agree that the Cochrane Database of Systemic Reviews is the leading database with journals and articles that have been reviewed systemically and found relevant for use by carers, healthcare providers, researchers, patients, and anybody interested in getting well-researched and peer-reviewed health information. According to Cochrane Library, the Cochrane systematic review database has articles and journals prepared and supervised by a well-experienced editorial team. This help in identifying, appraising, and synthesizing all the available empirical pieces of evidence to meet the specified research question. It also helps to ensure that the data presented has high evidence. Lastly, I agree that the database is reliable, and I would also recommend it to my colleagues and peers for use.

          Hello Zheman,

Our discussion was concise and well-written. A research database that nurses can use is CINAHL. According to Hopia and Heikkila (2019), CINAHL is a database that includes journal articles of all nursing fields, biomedicine, and healthcare in general. The wide variety of research articles found on the website makes it convenient for nurses since they can find articles addressing various health topics, assisting them in gaining insight into solving health challenges. Other databases that nurses can use include MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, and Pubmed. The different databases provide nurses with a variety of choices to find articles, ensuring they find the most appropriate research information to solve health problems.

      Hello Pamela,
This discussion on the database you have employed in searching for your peer-reviewed article is quite comprehensive. It is important for one to be able to provide credible sources which are evidence-based and able to answer meaningful questions and derive timely and accurate conclusions (Gupta & Manjali, 2020). Databases exist that enable scholars to explore the vast available information. You have highlighted your experience with the ProQuest Nursing and Allied Health Database. One key advantage you highlighted here is the timeliness of the
publications in this database enabling one to filter for publication dates within the previous 12 months. A quick review of the highlighted database points to a versatile database that is designed to meet the needs of researchers at health facilities as well as nursing and allied health programs at academic institutions (Nursing & Allied Health Database, n.d.). It is therefore helpful to nurses both at the training and practice level and would be highly recommended to my colleagues.

      Hi Pamela,

Great post. I agree with you, as graduate student, we are expected to write quality papers and with integrity. What better way to show that, than to use credible sources for our work? Choosing these sources should be a basic skill yes, however, this doesn’t always come easily for everyone, it can be more challenging with so many sources of information out there.  I do believe with some experience, resources provided in the Walden library, and databases provided, it helps narrow down what is credible and what is not, by explaining what is expected in a credible source (Walden university library, n.d). The Databases as you also mentioned allows one to filter their search to only get peer-reviewed scholarly results, which is very helpful because one does have to wonder if they are using peer-reviewed scholarly sources.

Using peer-reviewed scholarly articles is essential because other experts in the field pick the written work (articles) apart and allow the author to improve their writing and receive constructive feedback to create high-quality research and better material. You can rest assured that the materials used that are peer-reviewed and scholarly are accurately and thoroughly researched and are reliable. Al-Jundi and Sakka (2017) discuss the importance of a peer review process adding robustness to research papers assessment criteria and decreasing the possibility of poor research quality within a publication.

Walden University offers library access and writing support. The Walden library has many databases that are easily accessible and provides a quick answer section along with other help such as a “ask a librarian” button. You can also search by subject, and adjust your search criteria for the allotted dates you may require your article to be and other things, such as peer-reviewed materials, etc., to narrow your search.

I initially started my search on the main page and typed Mental Health in the first search field and difficult behavior in the second search field and was able to retrieve the article of interest for me. I did change the search criteria dates to 2020-2022 and peer-reviewed scholarly journals only. I had no difficulty finding what I needed but I know it can be challenging and time consuming sometimes. I typically use Academic Search Complete for a multidisciplinary database, Gale Academic OneFile Select for psychology and social sciences, and CINAHL & Medline Combined Search for Nursing and Allied Health Literature.  These are my go to databases because I typically have no trouble finding what I need in nursing information from these databases and would highly recommend them.

In response to your post, there is something that could help graduate students in their search for credible sources to use in their research. Meaning scholarly journals only sometimes provide scholarly articles. I mean that even in a scholarly journal or database, one can find articles such as book reviews, articles published in magazines, and articles written for specific professions to serve as guidance or handbooks (Popular vs. Scholarly Articles – What’s the difference? 2022). Graduate schools should consider utilizing peer-reviewed journal articles because they have undergone a rigorous review process and are most likely to be reliable concerning the quality of information. I have specific things to check before describing a source as peer-reviewed or somewhat credible for use. First, an article must have an abstract, introduction, literature review, methods, results, and conclusions sections to be thoroughly scholarly. I avoid book reviews and editorials because they are not always peer-reviewed and could be flawed with personal details. Doing this has helped in accessing articles with verifiable facts, ideas, and methods that led to the inferences. With scholarly articles, it is easy to assess the truth and identify weaknesses and strengths of the claims made within the article (Peer Review & Scholarly Sources, 2022). A high-quality research article is determined by the quality of sources used.

Excellent article; I appreciate you sharing it. The section on academic literature was particularly illuminating. As we set sail on this academic adventure together, it will be crucial for us to develop information literacy skills early on so that we can excel in our later courses. It can be difficult to make the jump from professional writing, which is more experience-based, to scholarly writing, which is more evidence-based, purpose-driven, and audience-specific, given that we all come from diverse backgrounds in literature. There’s a school called Walden in the woods (2018). Walden University Library defines information literacy as “the ability to identify information needs, locate relevant material, critically evaluate it, and effectively communicate it to an intended audience” (n.d.).

Given that Walden University is committed to and actively encourages social change, I have no doubt that you will be an influential agent of transformation in your chosen profession. As far as patient care and the system’s process go for that class of patients, there is a lot of room for improvement. Did you search for this article in a particular database? In my experience, both ProQuest and CINAHL have been quite useful. Both allowed users to specify a search window (month, day, and year) and filter results to only include peer-reviewed articles. In addition, several subheadings allow you to refine your search even further. In general, I found them to be straightforward and simple to use. Help with citations is also offered if required. Have any thoughts on the efficacy of these data warehouses?

    Module 3 Discussion

I wanted an article on acute care, and I found the publication  listed below which is a systematic review of the experience of nurses working in critical care and how they were impacted by COVID-19. To start my search, I first had to choose a database. I clicked the Research by Subject on the main page and chose a subject area link to explore databases in that area. I intended to locate a database with peer-reviewed journals. I then logged in to the database and looked for a peer review limiter option on the search page to prevent the search from giving me non-peer-reviewed content. The database I used has labeled the content into peer-reviewed scholarly journals, peer-reviewed, and peer-reviewed journals.

I was particularly interested in a systematic peer-reviewed article concerning acute care. I had to navigate various nursing and health sciences databases to find this article. I found filtered databases such as the Cochrane database of systematic Reviews and the JBI EBP Database (formerly Joanna Briggs Institute EBP Database) that had many systematic reviews. I also noted databases known as the CINAHL Plus with Full Text. I selected a systematic review publication because it offers a reader a high level of evidence that could help broaden my topic of interest.

I located my article in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews and noted the high level of evidence in the article. I did not encounter any challenges searching for this source and would highly recommend the database to my peers and colleagues. It has many peer-reviewed articles that address various topics related to nursing. One can search for articles by journal, title, and DOI and filter the search results according to the year of publications and the status of peer review.

        Initial Response

Evidence-based healthcare requires practitioners to integrate the best research evidence into clinical practices and patient care. This helps to ensure best practices and lower healthcare delivery variations (Owens, 2021). However, doing this is time-consuming and necessitates easy access to evidence, especially for busy practitioners. Without easy access to evidence, practitioners depend on more than 4 hours of their workday in research during consultations as they strive to base their clinical decisions on the most current evidence (Ganeshkumar, 2013). They may therefore be required to read many articles published in biomedical and health journals, which can be overwhelming. As a result of this challenge, systematic reviews were developed to inform and facilitate the process of evidence search. A systematic review synthesizes multiple studies to allow easy, efficient, and increased access to evidence (Ganeshkumar, 2013).

Systematic reviews are highly regarded in nursing science because they are a valuable resource for their practice. When done correctly, they offer nurses an efficient way to evaluate large amounts of information to guide them in decision-making in practice, policy, and patient care (Owens, 2021). Systematic reviews help nurses to know what is known about a topic and what is yet to be established in a manner that supersedes what is found in a single article. Relying on systematic reviews helps nurses to confidently generalize a finding for application with multiple populations and across settings.

      Hello Zheman,

You were able to use a variety of databases to locate a high-quality systematic review that was relevant to your interests. I appreciate your recommendation of the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews and will consider using it in my research. Knowing that the database has various search and filter options to help users find what they’re looking for is helpful. As a suggestion, we must filter the articles to be no older than 5 years to ensure that you are accessing the most current research on your topic. This can be especially important in nursing, where best practices and guidelines may change rapidly.

Hello, Zheman. I enjoyed reading your post for this week’s discussion board. You mentioned two databases in your post that I have also been able to utilize in the past to find credible research articles. These are the Cochrane Database and the CINAHL database. Both seem to have a robust library of credible sources. With graduate nursing, it is important that we utilize only such sources in our work so that we are able to produce quality material that other colleagues may also find to be beneficial to their own research. Al-Jundi and Sakka (2017) note that quality writing requires the basic skill of critical review and appraisal for credible research material. With so many resources out there to chose from, this skill is imperative for the graduate student striving to produce credible, quality work. Walden University provides graduate students with an extensive library to aid in this process as well.

great post, the directions on how to access peer reviewed scholarly journals are very well explained. i would also like to comment on the topic you selected, i believe this is a topic that has not got the much attention that it needs. nurses during COVID had it the worst, it was more than just an impact on their physical health, it was also on their mental health therefore, i appreciate you speaking more on the topic.

Your post is certainly helpful to most, sourcing a credible journal could be a very cumbersome process, however, following the instructions you have pointed out here make it an easier process. i used the A-Z database which led me to CINAHL, that was how i found my article on ebscohost, your post however, has given me another search option. having resources that are easily accessible play a huge role in easing the process of finding credible sources.

Incorporating and crediting past knowledge in your literature reviews is also an important tool for redressing who counts and is carried forward as knowledge producers (e.g., Cite Black Women, n.d.; Moradi et al.,2020). During your studies at Walden (n.d.), you will be reading, discussing, and producing scholarly writing in everything from discussion post to dissertations. Walden University offers the library for research and obtaining scholarly peered articles. One can access by going to your student portal and utilizing the library, search by database or type. I used Psychiatry Online. It was fairly simple, you just search what you would like to inquire about.

The article I chose was Collaboration Key to Meeting Demand for Mental Health Services. Clearly there has been a shortage of mental health professional s even before the pandemic, which is in greater need now. Brendal stated ” One clear message that emerges repeatedly is that to advance mental health for all, pychiartist must collaberate with our colleagues in the house of medicine and with mental health professionals to innovate and create synergy to leverage and extend psychiatric care and resources.

I would recommend Psychiatry Online to my colleagues. The ease of use and data found could be very beneficial to mental health professionals.

      Hi Amy,

I am excited to hear about your database resource for mental health and will be using it a lot in the MSN track – Psychiatric Mental Health NP. I went to it and played around a bit. Looks very interesting and I read that it has a Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders aka DSM library where there are fact sheets that cover recent changes / general information and development and ICD 10 codes as well. Sounds like it would be helpful out in the field as well.

      Hello Amy.

Thank you for sharing your discussion of the database you think will be useful for other people in their search of articles and journals for reference. I agree that throughout one’s life as a student, one will have to do lots of work through assignments, discussions, and even dissertations. Patak & Tahir (2019) state that this requires one to incorporate information and knowledge from others through their books, articles, or journals. This requires proper acknowledgment and reference to avoid plagiarism. I agree that Walden University library has various databases that can be helpful for students and faculty members. Psychiatric online is one of them that is simpler and more reliable. It contains various well-researched articles that students can use to help inform their study, discussions, assignments, and examination writing. Therefore, I would also recommend it to my colleagues and peers. Lastly, I agree that it is essential for psychiatric healthcare providers and anyone interested in mental health issues.

      Hi Amy. Great post.
While writing my discussion post I too came across Psychiatry Online. I found it rather useful as it included resources to the DSM library and other published resources on psychiatry. This platform could benefit us students studying mental health. According to Quagan, Woods and Power (2021), “online data collection opens up great opportunities to gather large amounts of data inexpensively and in short periods of time.” Being able to research scholarly articles on the different databases that are available help with limitless findings. In addition to these limitless findings, while browsing and searching articles, journals, and books online as students and professionals we need to learn how to dissect what information is reliable and the credibility of authors works (Walden University Library, n.d). Doing such will help us become better scholars.

      Hi Amy,

Using research evidence is critical for excellent scholarly writing (Laureate Production,n.d.). Many databases contain evidence-based research, articles, and other publications and Walden features 15 nursing databases where students can browse and find papers for their courses. I tried CINAHL Plus with Full Text, which is user-friendly. For various reasons, I recommend this database. For starters, it includes many journals with full-text access rather than simply abstracts. Second, Walden students can use it for free.Third, it provides numerous alternatives for narrowing your search, such as selecting peer-reviewed publications. Finally, you can obtain a PDF file of a magazine of interest.

As a PMHNP student, I believe this course will be broad and need lots of referencing for the assignments, discussions, and research. This can only be done correctly through proper and relevant referencing of other authors’ works. Therefore, finding reliable database sources is very important. The Walden University Library has provided students with resources, including reliable databases for learning and research purposes. For this article, I researched it from the Cumulative Index to Nursing &Allied Health Literature (CINAHL) database, which the Walden University Library provides as a reliable database. The CINAHL database contains various articles, journals, texts, research, journals, and e-books on nursing, biomedicine, allied health, and healthcare. While searching for this article, i experienced a major challenge in locating the article from the database. This was challenging since the CINAHL database usually provides full text for the selected journals being searched; thus, this took some time for me to locate the exact document successfully. Another challenge I experienced was finding some specific terms in the database. Therefore, I had to search for various alternative terms in my topic of interest before finally getting what I needed.

However, I loved using the CINAHL database. I found it more resourceful with a vast array of articles that I or any other PMHNP nursing students or lecturers can utilize for this course. Therefore, I recommend the database for all or any of my colleagues interested in finding the best nursing journals, research, and articles for their studies and referencing. I also loved the CINAHL database because it had various e-books, care sheets, and guides on different nursing topics and medicine that would help nurses and other healthcare providers with the knowledge they need to manage their patients comprehensively. This will be helpful for my colleagues because they will be able to do a quick overview of the mental illnesses of their patients as advanced mental health nurse practitioners in their current study and future work. With the advancement in technology and the use of technology in the education system, CINAHL can also be used by nursing students for them to find best evidence-based knowledge that can inform their critical thinking. According to Lee et al. (2018), CINAHL is one of the best databases that can be utilized by nursing students who are using mobile technology as a platform for the delivery of the nursing curriculum. While doing virtual studies, I would recommend that my colleagues use the database for the best-referencing material that contains evidence-based knowledge on nursing, allied health, biomedicine, and healthcare.

      Reply Discussion 3 Academic 6003

      Hi Jefferey,

Thank you for your post. Your strategy is slightly similar to mine. Indeed, The Walden University Library provides several databases that can be used to search for scholarly articles databases such as CINAHL hosts several research studies that one can incorporate into their paper. However, in most cases, because of the high number of materials hosted in academic databases, it can take time to get the appropriate information to use in the papers. Therefore, it is crucial to have a search strategy to ease the process of looking for suitable materials. Whenever I have to do any research, I come up with a search phrase that contains the keywords of the topic I am researching on. CINAHL helps to narrow down the search results. A significant component of a literature review is thoroughly synthesizing the literature and critically evaluating these previous works concerning the current research problem under investigation (Pautasso, 2013). Another component of retrieving scholarly journals from CINAH is that it gives you an abstract to decide if this is the article. As you stated, I recommend that my colleagues use the database for the best-referencing material that contains evidence-based knowledge on nursing, allied health, biomedicine, and healthcare. Although some databases may have evidence-based articles, researchers may be overwhelmed by the number available and may need more knowledge to state the significance of the literature. In the study, according to Lee et al. (2018), CINAHL is one of the best databases that can be utilized by nursing students who are using mobile technology as a platform for the delivery of the nursing curriculum. Most of all, technology plays a role in delivering healthcare services, especially mental health. An excellent scholarly article ought to be peer-reviewed to ensure that the article is reliable and trustworthy.

The implementation of evidence-based psychiatric rehabilitation: challenges and opportunities for mental health services

The article explores the utility of various evidence-based practices in mental healthcare. It highlights the role of antipsychotic drugs in treating schizophrenia and other related disorders (Vita & Barlati, 2019). Accordingly, the article notes a general shift from inpatient to community-based outpatient medical services. The authors note that other useful evidence-based interventions include psychosocial rehabilitation and non-pharmacological measures. These treatment options have proven effective in restoring patients’ cognitive, social, and emotional skills. Other measures which have shown positive outcomes for patients include cognitive-behavioral therapy, supported employment, and assertive community treatment.

I faced several challenges locating the article on PubMed since I had to adhere to key research constraints. The PubMed database lacks specificity for niche medical areas such as mental health. As such, it was quite challenging to focus the search on the most pertinent and excellent articles addressing the subject. While the database has many articles on mental health, not all entries state whether the investigators sought to assess evidence-based practices. To solve the problem, it was crucial to utilize precise search terms and criteria, such as date of publication, language, or research methodology. While I found some difficulty with the PubMed database, other databases listed in Walden University’s online library such as ProQuest Nursing & Allied Health may have been easier to search my chosen topic. The ProQuest database provides a range of articles with topics from nursing, allied health, and complementary medicine (Walden University, (n.d.). Navigating this database would have made it easier to research topics containing mental health.

Another hurdle was that many of the search results were incomplete or out of date. Online electronic databases do not necessarily contain the most recent information on a topic (Azeroual, 2020). This may be due to difficulties getting journal authorization by their publishers or technical problems cataloging new papers. To overcome this obstacle, it was crucial to search several databases and link to alternate sources, such as Google Scholar. It was also necessary to check all articles for potential restrictions imposed by the publishers. Issues such as reputation and grants are some of the commonest sources of biases in medical findings. Despite these obstacles, I would recommend PubMed to my colleagues as it has one of the widest catalogs on mental health.

    Scholarly Activity Discussion

Potkin et al. (2020) provide insights concerning the neurobiology of treatment-resistant schizophrenia. The article review evidence related to treatment-resistant schizophrenia and discusses a roadmap for future research. Schizophrenia is a common condition in my practice, and it gets worse when it resists treatment. Thus, this topic is of particular interest to understand what the evidence entails concerning treatment-resistant schizophrenia, including caregiving for affected patients. In addition, it is necessary to understand a condition from its onset. In that regard, Potkin et al. (2020) provide insights from the onset of schizophrenia symptoms, when treatment is responsive, to treatment resistance. I am also interested in understanding how schizophrenia starts affecting a patient from the first episode of psychosis and when treatment is working to the point that the condition becomes treatment-resistant (Potkin et al., 2020).

I searched for the article using PubMed and Google scholar. Since I had selected schizophrenia as the topic of my interest, my keywords were schizophrenia, symptoms of schizophrenia, and treatment-resistant schizophrenia. I wanted a more recent resource, and thus, I selected articles at most five years old. I landed in various articles before locating the article of my choice, but they only entail some details I was searching for. Thus, I selected the article after finding it relevant to all the details I had considered.

I experienced various challenges when searching for the article. First, using my first keyword (symptoms of schizophrenia) presented a shallow search. The results needed to be more sufficient for the details I wanted to consider since they were only relevant to the specific keyword. Secondly, many Google scholar results were partial articles. Thirdly, the three keywords provided me with inconsistent search results. For the first search, many results needed to be more relevant. The second search gave me general results that needed higher relevance. The third search gave me fewer relevant results, but at that point, I landed on my choice.

This database will be helpful to my colleagues in that it provides most of the peer-reviewed articles with the strongest evidence. Secondly, it is easy to navigate through the database and better when someone has selected keywords. Combining keywords can also be helpful for a search in the database, and Google scholar makes it easy. Google Scholar also provides one with a range of years of the articles’ publication, keeping one close to relevant results. In addition, one can identify more recent articles very first. Furthermore, the database is also effective for search since it provides library links and formatted citations. The science and technology in the results are also highly utilized.

I recommend this database not only to my colleagues but also to other researchers. That is because Google scholar is fast and easy to use, and its search interface is similar to Google. Secondly, the articles in Google scholar have references and links, making them easy to locate for the second time. Open-access journals are also available in Google scholar with full-text features. Scientific, medical, and technical disciplines are also well utilized in Google Scholar.

I enjoyed your discussion post; you recommended Google Scholar, which has lots of exciting information. As for me, when I did review your article from there, it was no charge for viewing—some of the database charges just for viewing an article. I can see why you chose to use Google Scholar. It was also accessible to use their database. Similar to using Walden Library, not all articles are peer-reviewed. According to Walden University (n.d.) Peer review is a literary journal used only for journal articles. After an article is sent to an academic journal, the editor sends it to several peer reviewers-typically scholars in the field for evaluation.

On the other hand, retrieving a non-peer-review article for me may be time-consuming because it needs to be checked for accuracy, and they may need more expertise to evaluate it. Peer review has been defined as a process of subjecting an author’s scholarly work, research, or ideas to the scrutiny of others in the same field (Kelly et al., 2014). A peer review process is that peer-reviewed articles provide peer review process is that peer-reviewed articles provide a trusted form of scientific communication. Not long ago, I would have to go to the library and ask the librarian for help with my research assignments. Access to Walden Library and the different databases gives me all the needed resources from anywhere in the world. I recommend using Walden library first because it gives you tools, such as videos and webinars, to get peer-reviewed articles. I found that the Walden Library database is user-friendly, and you can have access to the librarian if you need help.

    Module 3 Discussion

Finding the proper resources for scholarly writing can be difficult. There are requirements that books, articles, journals, etc. must meet. When searching for my topic I had to first understand what made it scholarly. “Scholarly sources are written by academics and other experts and contribute to knowledge in a particular field by sharing new research findings, theories, analyses, insights, news, or summaries of current knowledge (University of Toronto, n.d.).” As a nurse who has worked in Emergency medicine most of my career, I thought the article about nurses leaving emergency rooms post covid would be interesting.  I went through Waldens Library which directed me to ProQuest with the search that I conducted. I found that it was easy to navigate. Walden university library has several boxes you can check for selecting a book, article, journal, and so forth. It helps because you can see subdivisions off of the other boxes that you selected to narrow your search even more.  Multiple options popped up under the category I searched. This database was just very easy to navigate and it would be useful to others searching for scholarly resources.

Writing a scholarly paper takes more than just research. Learning to synthesize the information you read and form your own words is key. “Synthesis requires decision making, analysis, evaluation, and creation of new material, all rather high levels of thinking (Shellenbarger, 2016).” It is difficult depending on the topic for me to synthesize information. I’m sure many others struggle with that as well. If there is a topic that one is passionate about it is much easier to form an opinion and talk openly about that. On one hand, too much bias is involved, causing difficulty in writing a scholarly paper from one’s own opinion. “This is where one would need to be able to step back and write from an unbiased place of thought. Bias leads to results in which there is a systematic deviation from the truth (Al-Jundi & Sakka, 2017).”

The article I chose took place in Australia. It was surveying 398 nurses of all age ranges in the Emergency department. The main question was, would nurses leave the emergency room after the first year of Covid-19. The study resulted in 398 nurses responding. “48.2% of respondents reported that they intended to leave emergency nursing within 5 years (Cornish et al., 2021).” While the idea was not to talk in detail about the article researched I wanted to just touch base. The goal is to explain why the research database used was helpful or not. Once again I feel that ProQuest and Walden University library were easy to navigate and user-friendly for all.

      Response 2

      Sarah,

Great post! I understand it can be difficult to find proper resources. CINAHL Plus with full text is a powerful nursing and allied health database that enables researchers to access the latest evidence-based research and prepare for clinical practice. It contains more than 5.4 million records from more than 5,000 journals, books, and other sources. The database provides full-text access to over 1,500 journals, including more than 700 core titles which are essential for nursing and other health professionals (Zahra). With this database, researchers can quickly and easily find evidence-based research to support their clinical practice, research projects, educational programs, and other healthcare activities. According to Zahra, the database also provides access to a wealth of other resources, such as evidence-based care sheets, quick lessons, and continuing education modules. The database also contains evidence-based practice guidelines, health care books, and other documents related to care and practice.

    Scholarly and peer reviewed resources

Writing with integrity is a key aspect in the nursing career, using credible resources is one of the ways one can achieve this. That being said, it is easier said than done, with the internet filled with so many resources, it is very easy to fall into the trap of using a non-credible source for one’s work. Evaluating your resources is very important because some information we find on the internet may not be accurate and some may not be appropriate for scholarly research (Walden University Library, n.d.). As an academic, it is generally advised to use scholarly work for one’s research, this is so because most scholarly work is peer reviewed, they focus on a specific discipline and they also give in-depth research information (Walden University Library, n.d.). As one searches through a database for information, it is important to search specifically for peer reviewed work.

Using the Walden University database A-Z, I found an article that was of interest to me. I searched for mental health on the database A-Z, made sure to include peer reviewed article only. I had a few databases come up; I chose the most recommended which was CINAHL, this led me to EBSCOhost I searched for mental health and checked the box that said scholarly and peer reviewed, that is how I found the article titled. “ Characteristics of the ideal healthcare services to meet adolescents’ mental health needs: A qualitative study of adolescents’ perspectives.Links to an external site.” (MELDAHL, L. G. et al, 2022). Using the Walden university database was fairly easy, I like that the peer reviewed articles on this database have citation assistance too, makes it easy to correctly cite my sources. I would certainly recommend using this method to find journals for scholarly journals.

      Jessie,

Great post! Yes, it is easier said than done, I’ve learned alot since acceptance to Walden about writing with integrity. Evaluating your resources are very important (Walden University Library, n.d.), I’ve fallen into the trap of my information not being accurate. The generation we are in now uses the internet for everything, all you have to do is search. The problem arises when you need credible resources. Stapleton wrote there is four billion plus sites accessible on the web that have been uploaded without any editing, students need to be made aware of what constitutes as credible.

      Hello Nakazwe,

I second your point that Writing with integrity is a vital aspect of the nursing career, and using credible resources is one of the ways one can achieve this. As a result, the assertion that it is quite simple to get caught up in the trap of choosing a source that is not reputable for one’s work because the internet is filled with so many resources is true (Talapatra et al., 2019). Evaluating your resources is crucial because some of the information on the internet may not be reliable, and some may not be suitable for academic study. As a result of this, and based on my previous experiences, I would advise you to look into using Science Direct to search for articles that might be helpful to your investigation.

The database was designed to be intuitive and simple to explore for its users. This database is important for all your peers because it contains intriguing and helpful articles connected to every topic of study. Promoting this database to your contemporaries would be beneficial because it is a source of scholarly knowledge to study and stay current on the most recent studies.

      Jessie,

Information from the internet can be very tricky and you can’t trust the source all the time unless you know the website. I often will use the internet to help me with my keyword search if I am trying to find something in the databases and I’m not able to get the results that I am looking for. The one thing that I can say about the internet is that you don’t have to put a lot of information into the search box to get what you want. I would then take those examples or searches that I found and put them in my key word search in the database and it will usually produce results that I am looking for. The internet is used more and more by individuals because it produces results quickly and people are led to believe the information put on the internet from sources like WebMD or Google Scholars, but these sources should not be the standards in the way of scholarly research and review.

The availability of information on the internet continues to increase, especially with people looking to self diagnose. A study in 2018 showed that adults used the internet 59% more than in 2013 and that 55% of people looking for information on their health rely more on the internet than they did 5 years ago (Ashtari & Taylor, 2022). I have to admit that I am known for looking information up on the internet for a condition or medication that I am not familiar with. The difference that I would say that we as healthcare professionals have is we can distinguish between information that appears to be correct to information that is not correct.  One way is being able to identify your source as being from an credible source. When using information from a journal, be aware that journals have 2 titles, an article title and a journal title. The journal will also have a volume and issue number that associates it with a specific time frame, and an issue publication number for the volume range; journal numbers also generally cover only a certain number of pages ( Walden University Library, n.d.).

Performing an academic search or review for scholarly sources can be intimidating for individuals first entering college especially for those who grew up with internet. For individuals like me who did not grow up with the internet we were forced to use things like encyclopedia’s and spent hours and hours in the library, and if the library did not have what you wanted they would have to request it from another part of the earth and you would pray that it would arrive in time for you to complete your paper. We are know thankful for having online databases and internet to allow us to quickly access information to perform our research or review but the waters can become quit muddy if we don’t know how to identify what is an appropriate source or resource from information that can from Wikipedia.

Natasha, you are so correct about using the internet for searches.  I achieved my BSN online 12 years ago.  And the internet 12 years ago is so different than it is today.  But I am happy that the internet can help one with citing books and articles correctly, obtaining information in just a flash and not having to go to the library to look up anything.

I was just speaking to my coworker about going to the library when I was growing up and using the card catalog.  Yes, i grew up in the 70-80’s and I would have to spend hours at the library doing any type of research.

I like Walden University’s library as it is easy to use and to find available scholarly articles.

The article I selected is “Impact of nurse burnout on organizational and position turnover” by L.A Kelly, P.M Gee, and R.J Butler (2020). In the study, Kelly et al. (2021) sought to identify the relationship between burnout and resilience and the influence that they have on the turnover within the organization. Its findings will inform policy formulation to help in addressing burnout and improving the working environment to promote productivity of employees (Leitão et al., 2021). This cited article was found in the database PubMed, which is a free online resource of biomedical and life sciences literature. This database has 34million articles that are well discussed on life sciences as well as online books. This website also provides full text content from PubMed Central or may provide link to full text content on other publisher websites.

I did not experience any difficulties while searching for this article. PubMed is a very user-friendly database and I was able to easily find the article I was looking for. I accessed the article by searching for articles related to burnout in the PubMed site. The search was convenient and different related articles were listed in the search page.

I would definitely recommend this database to my colleagues. PubMed is a great resource for finding articles related to the biomedical and life sciences fields. It is also free and easy to use, making it a great resource for anyone looking for articles related to their practice area. Ease of use and accessibility of numerous articles makes it one of the best databases to assist in studies.

Overall, I would highly recommend PubMed as a resource for finding articles related to the biomedical and life sciences fields. It is free, easy to use, and provides a wealth of information.

    Hi classmate and professor,

The topic of interest that I searched in the databases was a nurse practitioner’s role in rural areas. I began my search in Walden’s library database searching in the CINAHL database for articles related to my topic of interest. After analyzing the relevance to my topic, I found an article on Nurse Practitioners improving healthcare services in rural communities. The article discussed how 20 states have signed legislation allowing NPs to practice independently, no longer needing a physician agreement to order and interpret diagnostic tests, prescribe medications, and administer treatments ( Nurse Practitioners Improve Services in Rural Areas, 2015). This is significant becuase there are many rural areas in the state of Florida(my home state) that needs access to healthcare. The next articles I began searching for were on states that allow nurse practitioners to practice independently and there were not many articles related to that topic. I was able to find a case study in the ScienceDirect database on scope-of-practice having a higher supply of nurse practitioners. The objective of the case study was to investigate the trends in mental health nurse practitioners supply in rural areas and their relationship with the scope of practice regulations. The case study concluded that regulations plays a role in maximizing the capacity of the NP workforce and states with the full scope of practice had a higher incidence in rural areas by allowing NP’s to help those underserved communities. Unfortunately PMHNP are not allowed to practice autonomously in the state of FL, but FNP’s already gained full practice authority and that’s a start. Knowing your state’s regulations will help prepare you for future employment. The last database I used to search for articles on nurse practitioners in rural areas was ProQuest. I found an article that discussed the lack of healthcare access in rural areas. The article discussed how people in rural areas did not have favorable healthcare outcomes due to lack of access to healthcare and most hospitalizations could have been preventable. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid came up with initiatives to improve access to primary care providers and specialists, which expanded tele health, remote evaluation of recorded images sent by patients to physicians, remote wellness visits, and expanding the scope of practice of lower-level non-physician providers (Johnston, 2019).
After completing my searches for articles related to my topic of interest, I found it difficult to find articles. An individual must be specific on the topic and must be able to know what articles are relevant. My topic of interest was practicing as a nurse practitioner in a rural area, most of the articles I read through talked about the lack of services offered in rural areas. I believe my colleagues may find my topic important if they are from a rural area.

Hi Jeandy, I also live in Florida and FNP can practice independently if they have a written agreement between FNP and a licensed physician.  This agreement will describe what the ARNP will be allowed to do in clinic.  It will also describe what diagnoses, medications and treatments they are allowed to initiate.  (Florida Board of Nursing &Raquo; Updated Standards for Protocols: Physicians and ARNPs – Licensing, Renewals & Information, n.d.)

I am hoping that in time, ARNP’s in the state of Florida will be able to practice independently without having a physician on board.

I think it is about time for our state to up their game and allow independent practice

    Hello professor and class,

The article by Morris and O’Riordan (2017) addresses preventing patient falls, which is a practice area of interest to me since I work in the inpatient department. The article is essential in my clinical practice since it informs of best practices to prevent patient falls. I used the PUBMED interface to search for the article in the MEDLINE database, which contains millions of scholarly journals that focus on biomedicine. According to Williamson and Winter (2019), PUBMED is used to search and filter articles for the MEDLINE database for easier retrieval.

The only difficulty I experienced when looking for the article was not knowing the exact keywords to use to find the most appropriate article. However, after contemplating a few keywords, I settled on the following: patient falls and preventing falls. The MEDLINE database would be helpful to my colleagues since it contains millions of research articles that can increase the knowledge of healthcare workers to help them address health challenges (Williamson & Minter, 2019). I would recommend this database due to its ease of access, its easy retrieval through the PUBMED interface, and its large collection of scholarly articles.

Evidence-based practice is part of nursing. Knowing how to produce evidence-based protocols and bringing that information to the practice (Al-Jundi & Sakka, 2017) is essential.
I used the EBSCO database and was able to find an article titled Brain tumours in young children: What’s new and what’s different? A Case based discussion (Neufeld, 2019).  It is an essential topic to me as I am currently a nurse for a pediatric neurosurgery group. I see many brain tumors come to our clinic when first diagnosed and many are seen in follow-up after surgery. This article provides the knowledge needed to care for such children and their families in the psychological process, treatment, tumor location and follow-up care (Neufeld, 2019). I could use key words such as nursing, pediatrics, and brain tumors to find this article.
This database would be helpful to my colleagues as it was easy to use. Using the advanced search, i was able to put peer-to-peer articles and make this search even more specific.

    Hello Class and Professor,

I recently came across an article published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) titled “Implementation of a Clinical Decision Support System for Opioid Prescribing in Primary Care: A Cluster Randomized Clinical Trial” that caught my attention because it relates to my practice area of primary care. As an MD working in primary care, I often face the challenge of managing patients with chronic pain and navigating the complex issue of opioid prescribing (Price-Haywood et al., 2021). Therefore, I was interested in learning about a clinical decision support system (CDSS) that could potentially help me make more informed decisions about opioid prescribing.

I found this article through a search on the PubMed database. I had no difficulties finding the article, as it was easily accessible through a simple search using relevant keywords. However, I did have some difficulty accessing the full text of the article as I am not a member of the JAMA network. I had to use my institutional login to access the full text of the article.

This database, PubMed, would be useful to my colleagues in primary care as it is a widely used database for searching the medical literature. It contains a vast array of articles on various medical topics. It is especially useful for those interested in staying up to date with the latest research in their field. Based on my experience with PubMed, I would recommend this database to my colleagues. It is user-friendly and allows easy searching using keywords, filters, and advanced search options (Mann et al., 2020). It also provides access to a large number of articles from various medical journals, including JAMA, which is a reputable source of medical information.

The article itself was a well-conducted study that involved implementing a CDSS in primary care practices to improve prescribing practices for opioids. The CDSS provided real-time feedback to physicians during the prescribing process and included recommendations for alternative pain management strategies, such as non-pharmacologic options and non-opioid pharmacologic options. The study found that the CDSS effectively reduced the number of opioid prescriptions and the total morphine milligram equivalent (MME) prescribed. It also found that the CDSS was associated with a significant decrease in the proportion of patients with high MME prescriptions.

Overall, I found this article informative and relevant to my practice as a primary care physician. It provided valuable insights into the effectiveness of a CDSS in reducing opioid prescribing and highlighted the importance of considering alternative pain management strategies (Smit et al., 2022). I believe this article would be useful for any primary care physician looking to improve their prescribing practices for opioids and better manage patients with chronic pain.

    Science Direct database

ScienceDirect is a database that contains scientific and medical research articles, books, and conference proceedings. It is a helpful resource for nurses and other healthcare professionals, as it provides access to a wide range of peer-reviewed, evidence-based information that can inform practice and improve patient care.

I recommend ScienceDirect as a resource for nurses and other healthcare professionals. It is a reliable source of information relevant to the nursing practice and can help nurses stay up-to-date on the latest research and developments in their field. In addition, the database is easy to use and allows users to search for specific articles or topics, making it a convenient tool for finding the information they need.

Science Direct was the 2nd website I had chosen from the list. For the resources for both, I typed a similar search article, “mental health nursing and the use of telemedicine,” Ovid did not produce as many results. Science Direct gave me 1934 results, and I could refine my results by the year, the article type, and the publication title, i.e., The Lancet, International Journal of nursing studies. It also allowed refining by subject areas and the access type, whether open or closed access.

I recommend ScienceDirect for use in papers and research as it is easy to navigate with a wide variety of articles.

Hi Joshua, this is the first time I am considering using the Science Direct database. I have mainly used CINHAL and ProQuest. After reading your post, I will consider utilizing this search engine. It is imperative to employ a mechanically correct research process while finding peer-reviewed articles. As we continue to grow throughout the program, we will continue to learn how to expand on our writing and become proficient in sorting through research. Walden University Library (n.d.) explains that having the ability to exercise a higher level of critical thinking to identify reliable and valuable evidence-based literary information is required throughout graduate-level work. This higher-level skill allows us to present concise work that is purpose specific, mechanically correct, and objective to our particular audience within the scholarly community, Walden University (2018). I am grateful that Walden has provided us with a broad range of research databases to explore and retrieve credible information. Thank you for sharing this information.

    Using the Walden Library

My experience so far with the Walden University Library has not been any different than other online libraries that I have utilized. The only thing that I would mention about the Walden University library is that no matter which database I utilize some of the articles are not available in the particular database and there would be a link stating “Find @Walden”, which will then connect me to the article in another database. I’m assuming that this means that the article that I’m looking for is not in that particular database and it will then connect me to where the article is, but sometimes the article is not available for my viewing.

My area of specialty is acute care nurse practitioner. I utilized the CINAHL database to perform my searches. My goal after completion of the NP program is to work in the hospitals either in the emergency room, as a hospitalist, or in the ICU.  The demand for nurse practitioners in critical or acute care is high and is expected to increase by 2025(Kaplan, 2021). As a nurse practitioner working in acute care I can expect to perform H&Ps, order test, interpret laboratory test and order and interpret diagnostic test. I  utilized the CINAHL database for this particular article. Navigating the CINAHL database was not difficult. I can filter the results to show me full text/peer reviewed. The reason that I use CINAHL as my go to database is because it is a healthcare based database and there are a lot of articles specifically for nursing. I can add to the search box fields key words and it will deliver a list of articles to choose from.

The Nursing and Allied Health database/ProQuest may now be my database of choice! I like the ease of navigation of the database. I can easily filter the years of the articles to within 5 years rather than changing the timeframe like in the CINAHL database. Also the Nursing and Allied Health database provided more articles that were relevant to my search than the CINAHL. Like my search  on the role of the nurse practitioner in acute care. The initial role of the ACNP in medical-surgical units was to provide routine and acute episodic care, including coverage for all rapid response. Routine and acute episodic care was provided to patients whose attending physicians signed the delegation agreement form. The ACNP did not admit or discharge patients, or perform medication reconciliation (Danesh et al., 2022). With the use of acute care nurse practitioners patient measures improved, such as satisfaction and quality of care measures. Improvements in management of pain, sepsis prevention and a supportive night care environment for staff.

I would recommend both the CINAHL database and the Nursing and Allied Health database for research. Both databases are easy to navigate and provide plenty of results for your research. The Nursing and Allied Health database may be a better choice for an individual who may not be quite sure what they are looking for as it will produce plenty of results without the need to be too distinct in the search fields, oppose to the CINAHL that requires the individual to be a little more distinct in what they may be looking for, limiting the results that will be produced.

      Hello Natasha

Your discussion is thorough and offers some insightful information. Therefore, from my experience with the Walden University library, I second your point that the Walden database can connect a researcher to other sources if a particular article is unavailable with the current database.

I agree with you as you have stated that nurse practitioners are in great demand, and that trend is likely to continue through 2025, especially in critical and acute care and mental illness. I would also recommend using the CINAHL database, which has been an effective database for accessing all nursing-related materials. It is very simple to find what I needed in the CINAHL database. As you have noted, all search results can be filtered to only display full-text, peer-reviewed articles (Hopia & Heikkilä, 2020). Therefore, CINAHL is the most preferred database since it is a healthcare-focused resource with a wealth of nursing-related content.

The CINAHL and Walden University library databases are excellent resources for this type of study. Both databases are convenient and loaded with relevant information. If you aren’t exactly what you’re looking for, you might get better results from the Walden University library database than the CINAHL. This is because the former doesn’t force you to be as specific in your search parameters, resulting in a more comprehensive list of results.

    Scholary Writing Resources

The article used for this assignment has been posted below. According to Canal-Rivero et al. (2022), using statistical analysis, a study involving 209 participants with First Episode Psychosis (FEP) found that having insight into one’s mental illness at the start of the study was a strong predictor of good functioning over the long term. In addition, maintaining or improving insight over time was associated with better interpersonal functioning. The study also found that insight tends to be a stable trait, but some people with FEP did experience changes in insight throughout the study. The results suggest that early intervention programs that help people with FEP develop insight into their condition may positively impact their long-term functioning.

The database I used to search for the article was found by first accessing my student portal and utilizing the Walden University online library A-Z Guide for nursing database. Here students can use the shortcut provided. Several peer-reviewed journal articles and resources are available to students. I used the APA PsycInfo database to search for my chosen peer-reviewed article. I did not experience difficulties searching for this article as I found the database easy to navigate.

I recommend this database to my colleagues as I find it beneficial for several reasons. First and foremost, by using the provided databases through Walden University’s library, my colleagues and I can ensure that we will be using reliable resources that have been peer-reviewed. Doing so ensures our research’s quality, validity, and accuracy. Also, by using these databases, we can critically assess the quality and relevance of research and consider how it might apply to our work. This can help us to become more informed, evidence-based practitioners and researchers.

    Module 3 Discussion

The world of nursing is ever-evolving; what goes in today as ingenious comes out tomorrow as outdated and pales against the subsequent ground-breaking medical interventions. As a scholarly student, learning how and where to get credible and reliable information is imperative. Enhancing professional knowledge and maintaining the integrity of that information is also essential. Al-Jundi & Sakka (2017) explains that critically appraising clinical research and assessing the credibility and value of clinical research should be a fundamental skill. With such a wide variety of resources at our fingertips, finding the right resources online that fit within the scholarly criteria can become overwhelming.

Walden Library is the go-to source that provides many credible and verified information. Navigating is very user-friendly. I was able to access the library from the student portal. Choosing the database, A-Z, and nursing as the subject allows one to focus on a specific area of expertise. I prefer using ProQuest Nursing and Allied Health database with full text for research. I have also explored CINAHL Plus with full text. These databases are recommended as “best bet” search engines and provide various nursing journals (Walden University Library, n.d.). While in the database, formulating search criteria is as simple as checking preferential boxes and then subcategories down to the month and year to narrow the search. Using this process, I could input my search criteria and find a peer-reviewed article of interest. This article discusses the effects of delirium throughout the ICU stay, from intubation to hospital discharge out of ICU, and the functional neurological outcome years after the critical illness Paixao et al. (2021). After utilizing this process, I would recommend these databases to my colleagues, and I also feel they will be helpful throughout all courses. These databases meet all the criteria for information literacy. It allows for precise and concise search when there is a specific purpose and audience in mind.

    Discussion Module 3 Week 4

I frequently precept recent graduates and new hires because I work in pediatric cardiac critical care. It might be difficult for new pediatric intensive care unit nurses and nursing students to comprehend different congenital heart abnormalities. A few information bases are accessible from the Walden College Library (n.d.) for articles and different distributions about nursing. It didn’t take me long to get what I really wanted in light of the fact that I picked CINAHL in addition to with Full Text as my best option from the web-based library.

I was directed to a page where I could search for a topic of interest. As I wrote learning in the final search field after critical care in the first, congenital cardiac problems in the second, and critical care in the third. It led to a journal paper, and I found one titled “Using models to educate congenital heart defects: a hands-on approach” by Aldridge, MD, which was published in Dimensions of critical care nursing: DCCN [Dimens Crit Care Nurs] 2009 May–Jun; Vol. 28 (3), pp. 116–22. While conducting my search in the CINAHL Plus database, I had no issues at any point. Even as a novice, I found the database to be simple to use using the Walden Library.

Because there are so many publications in this database, it is useful not only to myself but also to my coworkers. For a future literature review or assignment, we can find numerous resources on the topic we’ve picked. The ability to narrow your search is one element of this database that stands out.

This database is something I’d suggest for a number of reasons. It has several publications that are accessible in full text rather than simply their abstract, to start. Second, Walden students can use it for free. Third, it provides numerous alternatives to help you narrow down your search, like the option to only include peer-reviewed publications. Lastly, if a publication piques your attention, you can download it as a PDF file.

I have tried the CINAHL Plus with Full Text, and I find it user-friendly. I believe this database would also be useful to my colleagues and I would recommend using the Walden Library.

Scholarly writing and writing at the graduate level require discipline, integrity, and the ability to research topics and bring forth information for the reader. In doing research for different topics, it is imperative to ensure credibility of different articles and sources. It is a fundamental skill to be able to identify and appraise the best available evidence in order to integrate it with your own clinical experience and patients’ values (Al-Jundi, 2017).

There are many databases available when researching any topic. A plethora of these databases are available thru Walden University’s Library. One of my favorite in particular to use is CINAHL or Pubmed. Both of these databases and many others are able to be narrowed down by criteria, publication year, topic, design, and many other individual items in order to best choose articles to complete research.

For this particular article, I chose CINAHL. I then chose the terms “obstetric” and “depression.” I narrowed it down even further by choosing articles within the last 10 years and by also clicking the box to only select “peer-reviewed articles.” This criterion yielded 85 results. I was able to read thru the abstract of a few articles and decided to go with The association of psychosocial factors and obstetric history with depression in pregnant women: focus on the role of emotional support (Jeong et al., 2013). I didn’t experience any difficulties searching for this article, the most difficult was discovering which article spoke the best to my interest. I would recommend CINAHL to my colleagues because it is one of the most user-friendly databases that I have gotten to work with, and always yields best results in my educational history. It also is a database that is specific to health sciences and allied health studies so it provides very good options that are on topic and align with any health related clinical research requirements.

The Importance of Scholarly Literature and Peer Review
Scholarly literature and peer-reviewed resources are considered to be reliable and high quality. One way to ensure that you are using credible information sources in your work is specifically looking for scholarly literature journal articles and books written by recognized experts in the field pertaining to your research question. Scholarly literature is considered to be exceptionally  reliable in its methods, data and conclusions. There are several characteristics that make scholarly literature unique.

First, scholarly literature is is written by researchers who are active experts in their field, and is published in academic journals or through publishers who are affiliated with universities, and the leaders of organizations, such as a university press. Scholarly literature also conforms to academic and disciplinary standards, such as proper grammar, proper citations, and standards of research integrity to help you and other readers ensure that it findings are the highest quality. Scholarly research should always done with structure.  Foundational structure in research helps researchers and students navigate and evaluate scholarly literature for their own work. Only scholarly and  literature undergoes some type of review process by which the quality and accuracy of the work is vetted by other experts in the field. This process is known as peer review and and it is organized by the potential publisher of the research. Scholarly literature can only be published after passing peer review.

Walden University offers a variety of peer-reviewed sources beneficial for all student research through the Walden University library data base. I went to the webpage, and started my search by choosing the category “nursing” and narrowing my search down by typing in the world “psychiatric nursing”. Immediately, several scholarly literature pieces were easily assessable for research and my educational benefit. The webpage was easy to navigate and provided me with so many options. The specific article that caught my attention was “The Scope of a Nursing Practice in a Psychiatric Unit: A Time and Motions Study”. The article covered the by challenges of psychiatric nursing, and several factors that contribute to the difficulty of this field, such as complexity of care, stagnant staffing levels, and much more. I plan to utilize the student database more frequently for assignments, and I found this discussion to be very beneficial and eye-opening. This has shown me the many resources that I have at my fingertips.

      Week 3 Discussion Response 1

Hi Destiny, thank you for sharing. The post was a joy to read. The paragraph on scholarly literature was very informative. As we set sail on this educational journey together,  learning information literacy early on is vital to our success in subsequent classes. We are all coming in with different literary experiences, so learning to transition from professional writing, which is more experience-based, to scholarly paper, which is more evidence-based, purpose, and audience-specific, can be challenging Walden University (2018). Information literacy is understanding the type of information one needs for a specific audience, finding, evaluating,  and presenting the information objectively Walden University Library (n.d.).

Walden University supports and promotes social change, and with such passion for your field, I look forward to seeing you as a change agent within your field of study. The system has many areas for improvement regarding patient care and the process implemented in caring for that particular patient population. Did you use a specific database to find your article? I find that ProQuest and CINAHL worked very well. Both provided opportunities to narrow the search to the month, day, and year range and select peer reviews. In addition, there are other subcategories to further narrow search criteria. Overall, I found them user-friendly and easy to navigate. Citation assistance is also available if needed. What are your thoughts on these databases? Thanks again, Destiny, for sharing your thoughts.

I look forward to interacting throughout the course.

    Module 3 Discussion

Being a travel ICU nurse, and currently enroll in the Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Program, I can see how the benefits of Telehealth and Telemedicine will improve the shortage we face as healthcare workers.  The moment when I first experienced the use of telehealth at work was one night a coworker patient was experiencing stroke like symptoms after a fall from her hospital bed. During this time, I had only 7months on the job experience; this was an exciting, but scary moment for me. The stroke team and the nurse, and I immediately rushed the patient down to the catheterization lab, and there she was Dr. Amy Jarvis, the director of our hospital Primary Stroke Center. Nevertheless, Dr. Jarvis appears on a large TV screen, and a video conference was set up and she instructed the ER physician whether to give the tPa drug to the patient. After that experience I genuinely believed, not only stroke patients will benefit from telehealth because of the timeframe tPa’s was given, but also the people who lived in rural areas Searching for literature can be tedious process. Although there are thousands of articles and scholarly resources, even though a simple Google search, or even to get a good quality scholarly article takes time and great effort. A good scholarly article ought to be peer reviewed to ensure that the article is reliable and trustworthy. The peer reviewed article that pertains to my clinical practice is ‘The use of telehealth to increase mental health services access and promote medication adherence in rural locations’ by Talarico (2020). I selected this article owing to the important role that technology is playing in the delivery of healthcare services, especially in mental health. Technological elements such as telehealth can be used in improving access to mental care services. Given the shortage in mental health providers, patients in many areas in the US, especially the rural areas, lack access to mental health services. Telehealth services ensure that these patients can access vital healthcare services without having to travel to physically see providers. In addition, telehealth is also essential in ensuring that clinicians can make follow-ups with patients. The article by Talarico (2020) corroborates these sentiments and recommends the adoption of telehealth and such-like technologies to improve the delivery of healthcare services.

The process of searching for the article was not as difficult. The Walden University Library provides several databases that can be used to search for scholarly articles. The databases are arranged alphabetically with a short description of each article that highlights the content of the database. After going through the list of databases, I chose the CINAHL & MEDLINE Combined Search database. The database houses peer reviewed articles for nursing and health related literature. The database provides one with the opportunity to use different phrases to search for articles. I had come up with a PICOT question that helped me frame the articles that I wanted to use. I liked the database because it has many hits. In addition, the database provides an abstract that one can go through and determine if the scholarly article matches what they are looking for. I can recommend the database to other students.

      Hello Shantae,

Wow, you’ve seen firsthand how telehealth and telemedicine can make a difference in providing healthcare, especially in emergencies. It’s vital to learn further about the use of telehealth to improve access to mental health care and medication adherence for people in rural areas, where it can be harder to get the care they need. And, of course, using peer-reviewed articles like the one by Talarico helps ensure the information we use is reliable and trustworthy. Thanks for sharing your experiences and insights on telehealth with us.

      Hi Shantae,

I am impressed about your post on telemedicine and how it can be useful for each one to access medical care. Your article gave me an insight on how telemedicine could be boon to those who have limited medical facilities. IAs I was reading through your post it reminded me when I used telemedicine to get prescription and consultation during covid season when we all were scared to go out in public places. It was easy to navigate to find the article in CINHALL and at walden library.
